Tom's Z Scale Trains

I am also into Z scale.  I belong to the Northwest Pacific Z Scalers here in the Seattle area.  I have built five modules (see the slide shows and movie below) which we show from time-to-time.  I also have a couple of portable Noch layouts that I take to shows when we aren't showing the modules.

I live in Renton, WA just south of Seattle. I also belong to the Puget Sound Garden Railway Society and the Boeing Employee's Model Railroad Club. I have displayed my garden layout during the West Coast Regional Meet July 1997 and the 17th National Garden Railway Convention in 2001.

Z Scale Slide Show

These are photos from the Monroe, WA train show in April 2003 where I showed some of my Z Scale modules.

Z Scale QT Movie

This is an 8 minute movie of the modules shown at the Monroe, WA train show in April, 2003.  The modules are owned by members of the Northwest Pacific Z Scalers model railroad club here in Seattle.  This movie will stream using QuickTime and is about 20mb in size.  It was produced on a Mac using iMovie.  A DVD is available for a $10 contribution to the club.  Run the slide show for further information.

Z Scale Slide Show (BYOZ)

We have had three shows where we did not take our Z scale modules.  We have been trying a "Bring your own Z" layout (BYOZ) concept.  A number of members of the Northwest Pacific Z Scalers displayed portable layouts (2' x 4' or smaller) at both the train show in Auburn, WA at a local museum in Sept. 2003 and in Maple Valley, WA in Oct 2003.  Also included is the table at the Boeing Swap Meet in November where we showed a couple of Z Scale layouts in the entryway...very popular.   These are slides of the people and layouts displayed.
Z Scale Slide Show (BYOZ & Modules) GATS show in Puyallup, WA, Nov 23-24, 2003. (Club modules and Z Layouts).  New 30degree and 4' module for this show.  Pictures show before and after scenery painting.  I brought the modules with track with plaster and rocks in place.  Did painting and trees during show.  Show participation was led by Jim Glass.

Z Scale Poor-Mans Double Stacks

I have a container yard on one of my Z Scale modules and wanted to add some modern stack cars .  Not wanting to spend time building them from a kit or spending $80 each, I decided to bash some Marklin US flat cars from one of the starter sets.  I got some off Ebay for around $25 each. I started by gluing a brass strip (K&S #230 .016x1/4") the length of a Marklin container on each side and added a plastic square rod on the ends.  I took off the trucks and airbrushed the cars (grey primer, then Floquil TTX Yellow), and added some black highlights.  I finished by painting the container wells black (to help the illusion), cut off some containers (almost half) and glued them in place.  After I took the first batch of pictures, I added some screen to the ends for "pads" and painted them with grey primer,  I painted over lightly the black on the sides and added some Woodland Scenics dry transfer lettering and signs from the DT571 and DR602 sets to simulate markers (since they are so small, it's just for effect and color). I did a final light coat of dull finish to fix the transfers.   The final picture shows the finished product ready for the yard.  I have 6 completed and I am planning to do 6 more. They look great from a distance, but I will have to cut some of our tunnel portals to accommodate the extra height....enjoy, tomg
